This workshop is organized by the Commission on Art and Cartography of the International Cartographic Association (ICA), in collaboration with ETH Zurich, Institute of Cartography and Geoinformation and Concordia University (Montreal). It will take place from June 11th to 13th, 2012 at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. The workshop will be free of charge, the lunches will be provided but the participants will have to pay for their lodging (and make their own reservations).
Submission process and important dates
The main outcome of this workshop will be the production of a collective movie dedicated to narrative cartography. This movie will be made of the different contributions of the participants of the workshop. Support from students and professors from film studies will be provided in order to help turning academic and artistic work into cinematographic essays (2 to 5 min.). These essays will be collated into a full movie after the workshop. It is hoped that this film will be screened in film festivals, as well as during the 26th International Cartographic Conference (Dresden, 2013). It is also hoped that a selection of the best papers will be published in a peer review journal as part of a special issue on cartography and narratives.
In order to facilitate interactions, the workshop will include a limited number of participants. To participate to the workshop, each participant must submit a proposal describing her/his project by January 15th, 2012. Each proposal should include a description of the topic (max. 500 words) as well as a description of how the author(s) would see her/his work turned into a short movie (max. 500 words). The proposals must be submitted to Barbara Piatti (email@example.com) and Sébastien Caquard (firstname.lastname@example.org).
